Geometric Fireplace Cover

A follower on Instagram messaged me asking if I could build an insulating cover for their drafty fireplace and gave me loose freedom for the design. After some discussion, we decided on a mixed-wood geometric pattern at 60º angles. After cutting a piece of plywood to the right shape, I selected eight different types of wood:

  • White oak

  • Hickory

  • Maple

  • Red oak

  • Alder

  • Cherry

  • Sapele

  • Walnut

Everything was milled to 1/8” thick and 2” wide. It was particularly fun arranging and rearranging the pieces and assigning arbitrary rules for how they should be placed.
